Exploration Topic: Our Impact

Essential Question: How do my actions impact growth and change?

Focus Area: Change

Weekly Focus: Things that Change How am I helping the children notice changes around them (e.g., light and dark, weather)? How am I helping the children explore the changes in their lives (e.g., transition to summer, or a new classroom)? What materials can I provide to support this Exploration?

Focused Learning Activity for The Week: Students will be encouraged to join the teacher in the science area. With this activity, children will have the opportunity to better understand how things change around them, ways they may change. The teacher will show children the light table we have in the classroom, then the teacher will put it on and then off, children will see directly the changes it made. The teacher will ask What changes can you notice? Tell me more about it? What other things can you notice that change around you?

Students that need extra support: Will be given prompting answers and asked children What does it mean to change? For example, "The teacher will invite children to sit in the science area, and she will show children the light table and will put it on and off, then the teacher will ask children," What changes do you notice happening with the light table? The teacher will write whatever they express.

Students that are ready for a challenge: Will be prompted to use multiple sentences when responding to the question "What does it mean to change? What changes do you notice that happen with the light table?" ? Tell me more about it? Children will have the opportunity to explain what they know in long sentences; the teacher will extend the conversation and will write whatever they say.

ELL Students: Will be given the directions / questions in Spanish.  Dictation will be written in whichever language they answer.

Foundational Text for the Week: The Goodbye Book by Todd Parr Standard Addressed: P-SE 9.. Child recognizes self as a unique individual having own abilities, characteristics, emotions, and interests. In this book there are many feelings people might feel when they say goodbye. What are some of those feelings? Sometimes saying goodbye is really hard. Sometimes saying goodbye is easy. Will you tell me about a time when you said a hard goodbye or an easy goodbye? We are getting ready to say goodbye to our 3-K class. What are some of the things you will remember about our class?
