Essential Question: What is Our Community? 

Focus Area: Building Weekly Focus: Noticing Buildings 

Focused Learning Activity for the Week: 

Students will be encouraged to join teacher at the Blocks Area to learn how buildings and houses are constructed. Children will then construct on their own. 

Students that need extra support: Will be given prompted questions like what do you see? What else can you find? What about this? Students that are ready for a challenge: Will be prompted to use multiple sentences when responding to the question, name the colors they picked and the colors they made. 

ELL Students: Will be given the directions / questions in Spanish.  Dictation will be written in whichever language they answer. 

Standard Addressed: Goal –LC 2. Child understands and responds to increasingly complex communication and language from others. 

Foundational Text for the Week: 

All Buildings in New York: That I Have Drawn So Far by James Gulliver Hancock This book is about buildings where we live – New York City. Are there any buildings in here that you have seen before? The Flat Iron building is different than most other buildings. Let’s look together and see what makes if different. 

• What do you notice? 
• Some of the buildings had pictures on them. Let’s look at this one with the noodles. 
• What do you think might be inside this building? 

Learning Centers Available for the Theme: 

Blocks- Children are encouraged to explore the block center. They will be shown a few unit blocks, shown where they can be found in the classroom, and shown how to match them to their outline in order to clean up.

Dramatic Play- Children are invited to explore the dramatic play area and use the props and clothing provided. Dramatic Play will be set up as a kitchen.  Teacher will introduce basic materials, how to use them, and how to put them away. 

Art- Children are invited to explore the art area. They will be shown a paint container, brush and paper. Teacher will model how to dip brush in paint and paint a few brushstrokes on paper. Students will be shown where materials can be found in the classroom and what they should do when they finish painting. 

Science- Children will be shown a few items from a collection of natural objects. Teacher will model how students can begin to explore some of the materials. They will be shown where these materials can be found in the classroom and how to put them away when finished. 

Math- Children will be shown a couple of puzzles. Teacher will model how to take apart and how to put a few pieces together. Students will be shown where puzzles can be found and how to put them away. 

Library- Students are able to explore books from the classroom library. 

Writing- Students are invited to explore the materials provided in the writing center. They are encouraged to explore their name cards. 

Sensory- Students will be shown a small amount of sand and a few toys. They will be shown where these materials can be found in the classroom.  Students will be prompted to wash their hands before and after using the sand table.

Weekly Focus: Investigating Buildings 

Focused Learning Activity for The Week: 

Students will be encouraged to join the teacher in the science area.  The teacher will prompt the students to draw an answer to the question, "What is a construction? what we can build? What materials should we use?  the teacher will invite children to observe some pictures about materials and buildings, then she asks children what they notice about them? What they notice about our school? What materials do you think you need to build a building or structure? 

Students that need extra support: Will be given prompting answers and asked children what can we build? For example, "The teacher will invite children to sit on the science center, and she will invite children to observe some pictures about construction materials, then the teacher will ask children What they notice about them? The teacher will write whatever they express. 

Students that are ready for a challenge: Will be prompted to use multiple sentences when responding to the question

• What materials do you think you need to build a building or structure?

Who Tools? by Toni Buzzeo: Six craftsmen build a house from the ground up. There are so many tools in this book. Which tools do you remember? The book talks about lots of different people who use these tools in their jobs. What are some of these jobs? What kind of tools do you use to help you?
